A Debut in the Land of the Long White Cloud

This Thursday, Tomáš will make another significant debut, this time in Auckland, New Zealand. For his first appearance before a New Zealand audience, he will take the podium of the Auckland Philharmonia, one of the country’s leading symphony orchestras. Even on the other side of the world, Tomáš remains true to his role as an ambassador for Czech music. For his debut in the Land of the Long White Cloud (Aotearoa), he has chosen Bohuslav Martinů’s The Frescoes of Piero della Francesca. Martinů’s music holds a special place in his repertoire, and Tomáš has long been a passionate advocate for the composer’s works on concert stages around the world.

The Auckland concert also has a compelling artistic theme, bringing music and painting into dialogue. Martinů’s Frescoes were inspired by Renaissance murals in the Italian town of Arezzo, while Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, which will close the evening in Ravel’s brilliant orchestration, was conceived as a musical tribute to an exhibition of paintings and drawings by the composer’s late friend, Viktor Hartmann. Adding another dimension to the programme will be Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, performed by Selina Ott, the Austrian trumpeter who, in 2018, became the first woman ever to win first prize in the trumpet category of the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich.

Further details about the venue and concert programme can be found in the concert calendar.
